Laura Prior is a counsellor and accredited social worker with over 16 years experience working in the areas of mental health, problematic alcohol and other drug use, trauma, relationships, self-awareness, self-esteem and welfare.

Services

Laura provides services for individuals, couples, families and organisations – offering support, practical solutions and strategies to manage life in a more positive way.

Laura works with people who are: feeling overwhelmed and stressed; being held back by anxiety or depression; concerned about their drug and/or alcohol use; or trying to support someone with substance use issues.

Alcohol and other drugs

Problematic alcohol and other drug use is a complex issue, in that it involves both physical and psychological urges. It can be incredibly difficult to reduce or stop using drugs or alcohol on your own.  Laura works with people to navigate the journey to recovery, including the ups and downs.  She understands the multifaceted nature of alcohol and drug addiction and works with people to address each facet and its impact for long term change.

It can also be challenging and heart breaking to watch someone you love struggle with issues with substance use, it is hard to respond to the person using substances rather than react to their, at times, destructive and difficult behaviour.  Laura works with families of people who use alcohol and other drugs to support them to support their loved one and offers some practical information about how to manage various difficulties in their relationships. 

Depression, Anxiety & Anger Management

Everyone experiences feelings of sadness at some stage, it is a natural part of the ups and downs of human life. Feeling sad for a long period of time makes life difficult and is not good for your overall health and well-being.

Everyone experiences anxiety and fear at times, it is our body’s way of keeping us alert and protects us from danger, but it can become a problem when fear, worry or anxiety start to interfere with your day to day life.

Everyone experiences feelings of anger at times but feeling angry all the time or being around someone who is always angry is exhausting and stressful.

Laura can help you understand what you are experiencing and work towards a more happy, less anxious way of life using various strategies, building on your strengths, and helping you discover who you really are.

Self-Awareness / Self-esteem

Self-awareness helps you to learn more about yourself and what you are capable of. We sometimes have limited understanding of who we are, where we fit in the world, our strengths and weaknesses, why we think and feel the way we do, our preferences and tendencies.  Our sense of self and self-esteem are strongly linked to our self-talk and if our self-talk is mostly negative, it will impact our experience of the world.  Becoming more aware of these things can help us develop honest, genuine relationships, and improve our thoughts and feelings.

Family and Couples counselling

Families usually make up our main support network and have the potential to make us or break us.  Positive family relationships can make a huge difference to our ability to cope with everyday life, managing mental health issues, substance abuse issues, and building healthy, long-term relationships. 

Laura is also a trained PREPARE/ENRICH Facilitator and can help you to deepen your bond with a personalised snapshot of your relationship to either PREPARE for or ENRICH your marriage.
